School’s Almost Out! 5 Ways to Keep Kids Busy (and Musically Sharp) This Summer

Summer’s coming—and while kids are ready for a break, that doesn’t mean their instruments should be! Whether your child is new to music or already playing solos, keeping them engaged over the summer helps them stay sharp, build confidence, and have fun along the way.

Here are eight low-stress, high-fun ways to keep their musical momentum going:

1. Take Summer Lessons or Attend Music Camp

Regular lessons (even just a few!) provide structure and a sense of progress. Bonus: it gives kids something to look forward to each week.

2. Create a Weekly “Practice Challenge”

Turn practice into a game! Set mini goals—like learning a new scale, mastering a riff, or playing for a family member—and reward progress with small prizes or praise.

3. Make a Summer Playlist—Then Learn It

Ask your child to pick 3–5 favorite songs and turn it into a summer music bucket list.

4. Have a Backyard Concert

Kids can perform solo or with friends. Set up a backyard concert, add signs, snacks, and an audience (even if it’s just the dog). It’s great motivation and a fun memory-maker.

5. Explore a New Instrument (Just for Fun!)

Even short-term exploration of a new instrument keeps their curiosity alive. Rentals and lessons are a great way to test the waters.

6. Start a Band with Friends

Starting a band with friends is not only an exciting adventure but also a fantastic way to deepen friendships and make amazing music as a group.

7. Create a Special Practice Space

Creating the perfect practice space at home is essential for any budding musician. A well-designed environment can inspire creativity, enhance focus, and make practice sessions more enjoyable.

8. Record Your Jam Sessions

Recording yourself is a great way to track your progress and hear where you can improve. Plus, it’s fun to listen back and hear how far you’ve come!
