Porch Jams & Backyard Beats: How to Make Music a Part of Your Summer

Summer and music go hand in hand—like lemonade and sunshine. And when the weather’s this good, why keep your music inside?

Whether you’re strumming a guitar on the front porch, drumming on a picnic table, or serenading your neighbors from the backyard hammock, summer is the perfect time to take your music outside and let it breathe a little.

Here are a few easy (and fun) ways to make music part of your summer routine:

1. Set Up a Porch Practice Spot

Move your instrument, music stand, and a chair to the porch or patio. Fresh air can make practice feel less like homework and more like a vibe. Just remember to avoid leaving instruments in direct sun or extreme heat—shade is your friend!

2. Have a Backyard Mini Concert

Invite a few friends over for a backyard concert. Just plug in the amp (if needed) and perform a short set. It doesn’t have to be formal—just a fun way to share what you’ve been working on. Bonus points if you throw in s’mores.

3. Play at the Park

Portable instruments like ukuleles, acoustic guitars, and even cajón drums are great for a jam session at the park. It’s a great way to build confidence and spread some spontaneous joy.

4. Get the Family Involved

Even if they don’t all play, they can clap along or help create a rhythm section with whatever’s nearby (buckets, cups, pots and pans—use your imagination!). There are many ways to keep your kids busy with music.

5. Jam by the Campfire

There’s nothing quite like playing music under the stars. Acoustic guitars and singalongs around a campfire or backyard bonfire create unforgettable memories. Keep it simple and heartfelt—classic campfire songs always win.

6. Join a Summer Music Series

Check out local events like the First & Main concert series here in Hudson or the Summer Music Festival featuring the Hudson Bandstand—live music is fuel for inspiration. Watching great musicians perform might just spark your next favorite song to learn.

7. Start a Band with Your Friends

Summer schedules are a little looser—so why not use that time to get together and jam? Form a band with your friends, write some original songs, or just learn a few covers to play at your next hangout. You don’t need a full lineup—just a few friends and a good sense of rhythm.
